Overview
The Start-up of the Year Award rewards business excellence in incubated start-up enterprises. Established in 2004, the Award is given to the best start-up enterprise completing its incubation period during the year of reference.

Why a Start-Up Award?
Business plan competitions reward valid business ideas and entrepreneurial initiative. The Start-up Award, on the other hand, recognises excellence in business projects that have successfully taken off on the market.

The Award aims to:

  • focus visibility on enterprises that effectively deserve the limelight;
  • provide feedback on business plan appraisal methods and on the effectiveness of scouting initiatives pursued by incubators.

The judging process
Enterprises in the running for the Award are judged by an external panel of analysts and consultants on the basis of 19 qualitative and quantitative parameters.

Emphasis is particularly focused on innovation, measured by indicators such as:

  • innovative content;
  • technological level of innovation;
  • timeframe for competitive advantage to be achieved;
  • technology generation and domain;
  • R&D investment.

Importance is also given to business skills such as:

  • managerial ability;
  • business growth;
  • openness to accepting new partners;
  • business appeal.

Finally, a more strictly quantitative analysis is made of business outcomes and growth trends, with focus placed on turnover figures, staff numbers, and income and operating margins. To this end, a comparative analysis is made of third-year figures for the enterprises so as understand growth rates.
