The City of Turin is a partner in the Horizon Europe Climaborough project - with ANCI Toscana as the Italian lead partner - which aims to bridge the gap between design and implementation of urban innovations, especially in the face of the climate emergency and the consequent mitigation and adaptation needs that cities must meet to protect their citizens.

To this end, the Climaborough project aims to define and test three innovative concepts:

  • the 'Climate Sandbox', aimed at facilitating, from a legal and/or administrative point of view, the dissemination of technologically and socially advanced innovative solutions capable of adapting to climate change;
  • the 'ClimHub', which aims to promote widespread dissemination of sustainable innovations against the climate threat by involving start-ups, solution providers and local authorities in innovative replication methods
  • the 'Climate Service', which consists of the collection and transformation of climate-related data into customised products, such as projections, forecasts, trends, economic analyses, evaluations, in general information useful for the development of best practices and solutions for society as a whole.

The ultimate aim of the project is to pursue a systemic transformation, supported by city-friendly climate services, accompanied by a strategic, long-term and holistic approach to investing in climate action, together with a new city governance.

To achieve this objective, the project envisaged the launch of an innovation procurement procedure to identify a set of climate-related services able to meet the territorial needs of the various project partners. Therefore, each project partner city worked on the identification of a challenge of its own interest, which will be the subject of the "innovation partnership" managed by the lead partner ANCI Toscana as contracting station.

The challenge for the City of Turin thus configured concerns the development of socio-technical solutions to reduce the amount of 'RAEE' (Rifiuti da Apparecchiature Elettriche ed Elettroniche: Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and textile waste and to improve the collection of such waste with the ultimate aim of reducing climate-changing emissions.

The City is interested in different types of solutions, among others, able to:

  • encourage the exchange of goods before they become waste and other re-use practices;
  • contribute to the correct disposal of RAEE and textiles by citizens;
  • promote the creation of data sets on waste collection and citizens' behaviour.

The Circoscrizione 8 (District 8) of the City of Turin was also pre-identified as a test area for possible pilot solutions.

Each of the 8 partner cities, including Turin, will select two solutions, which will receive up to € 150,000.00 each for the implementation of their solution. Companies can respond to more than one challenge.

On the Climaborough project website are available:

  • the instructions for participation in the tender;
  • the tender documents;
  • the video and slides of an initial orientation workshop held on October 30th
  • a FAQ section.
