Seventy-four students from high schools in Turin and its province competed in the final hackathon of the fourth edition of Coding Girls Turin, a pathway to STEM disciplines and digital opportunities promoted by Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS in collaboration with Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.

The final challenge of the project, which aims to train students from Turin and province in technical and scientific pathways, was hosted by I3P, the Innovative Companies Incubator of Politecnico di Torino, on May 15, 2025.

The challenge of the hackathon

The students, divided into 20 teams, created a chatbot in response to the challenge "ChatCare. The chatbot for social inclusion and support", geared toward developing a smart technology for a specific target audience, able to simplify access to one or more social and care services in the city of Turin, and to offer immediate and reliable information to those who need it most.

The winners of the hackathon were:

  • Overall winning project: Team #12 "Somme" of ITC G. Sommeiller, composed of Cristian, Leonardo, Sebastian and Alessandro with the project "VroomVroomTO";
  • Most inclusive project: Team #20 "Tronky's fc" of IIS A. Avogadro, composed of Ilyas, Lorenzo, Adam with the project "TurinForAll";
  • Most creative project: Team #6 "Visg a Visg" of Convitto Nazionale Umberto I, composed of Sofia, Isabella, Giulia and Vittoria, with the project "Stayability";
  • Best user-friendly chatbot: Team #16 of IIS Galileo-Ferraris, composed of Emma, Victoria, Elisa and Viola, with the project "Scarpe Rosse" (Red Shoes).

Speaking at the daylong event was the young enterprise U-Care Medical, a spin-off of Politecnico di Torino and an innovative start-up alumnus of I3P that won the Startup Award 2023 at the nationally famous “Premio 2031” competition.

Coding Girls: the initiative

For the past eleven years, the Coding Girls program has been contributing to the challenge of achieving equal opportunity in science and technology by acting on several fronts, with a collaborative alliance based on the Education for Life model, among schools, universities, organizations and companies united by common goals to help young female students gain confidence in science, navigate their way to science-technical studies and professions.

The alliance, led by Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS with the sponsorship of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Italy, has the active collaboration of Microsoft, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, ING Italia, Roboteco Italargon, and Google.org.

The project involves a large territorial network made up of schools, families, universities, companies and public and private organizations. Thanks to this solid educational cordate, having involved about 15,000 female students in more than 30 Italian cities and more than 33 universities, the program offers young people the opportunity to get to know and meet role models from the academic and corporate world, to be inspired by their stories and discover new outlets and career fields.

Among the different declinations: AI at the service of the territory (University of Cagliari, University of Salerno), cybersecurity against cyberbullying (University "La Sapienza" of Rome and "Federico II" of Naples), data science (University of Milan), financial education and environmental sustainability. The program is based on a peer-to-peer training model: in Palermo, 50 university students become tutors to high school juniors; in Milan, mixed teams of Italian and foreign university students train younger colleagues. There are also moments dedicated to personal development through the Personal Ecosystem Canvas tool, to design one's future with awareness.
